back shelf shenanigans

Traffic jams on Osaka's overcrowded roads are commonplace, leaving drivers with little to do except wallow in their own boredom. However, just lately people have started to consider their fellow traffic-jammers in ways no one could have imagined unless they had an extraordinary imagination.

In ever increasing numbers, people are entertaining each other by adorning their back shelf with all manner of odds and ends. This brings a smile to the traffic-jammed driver in the car behind, and gives them something amusing to talk about when they get home from work, following three hours in gridlock.

Man: I'm back! Hey, guess what I saw while I was stuck in a traffic jam on the way home.
Woman: Another car?
Man: Yes, but I also saw some pandas on a back shelf. It was hilarious.
Woman: That's nice.

This one even features a small convenience store.

A mini within a mini. It's not every day that you see that.

One of my friends shares a car with his Japanese girlfriend, and every time he drives it has to move the twenty odd stuffed animals on the back shelf!
