Among the modern office blocks near the centre of Osaka, I stumbled across this ramshackle house. Somehow it has survived the modernisation that has taken place in the neighbourhood, a testament to the might and power of the oba-san who, no doubt, lives within.

No bulldozer, no construction company, no planning department can defeat the oba-san.

People say that after a nucelar holocaust only cockroaches will survive. I think we can add the oba-san to that list.
